Bring your guitar to church
According to a recent BBC report,
John Lennon met Paul McCartney at
a church fete. Their music making
became pop music history and it is
no overstatement to say that today,
churches are Canada’s busiest
live music performance venues. As
guitars are a mainstay of contemporary
music, and there are more and more
accomplished players, a guitar is
a welcome instrument in a praise band.
Here's a typical quote from a young
church musician:
"I'm 16, and as community
service I play guitar in my parish,
St. Augustine's, every Sunday. I
was introduced to this by my girlfriend.
When she asked me about doing this,
I had a flashback. I remembered
how when I was younger, the music
in church was always boring. It
was an old lady sitting at an organ
playing the same humdrum music over
and over again. I realized that
if I could make the music a little
more exciting, it might make for
a better time for all my peers and
younger children. I'm proud to say
because of me, and the rest of the
church band, the Sunday 5:00pm mass
is one the most crowded of the week."
(quoted from Teen Ink)
Worship applications
The guitar is very portable, easy
to play and is an ideal accompaniment
to singing. Many people learn it
in order to lead worship at children's
ministry, or share their talents
by teaching group guitar classes
in church. Hundreds of hymns can
be learned with a few simple chords.
Musical instrument companies have
dedicated their efforts to making
instruments that creative people
will love and get inspired by to
make more music. On many church
performance platforms, space is
at a premium, so bear in mind that
microwave-sized acoustic instrument
amplifiers and small but powerful
guitar and bass amplifiers are available.
They reproduce studio quality sounds
and can easily plug into the main
church system.
BOSS is the world's leading manufacturer
of high-quality "stomp boxes"
– small pedal operated effects
for guitar players. Many inexpensive
guitar tone deficiencies can be
cured by the use of a graphic equalizer
pedal, and a digital reverb pedal
can bring a sterile acoustic environment
to life. People may think they have
an open mind when it comes to music,
but their subconscious has been
trained by listening to thousands
of hours of well-produced audio.
This means poor sound is detected
and judged immediately. New audio
technologies, properly applied,
make the church music experience
as inspiring as intended both for
the musicians and the congregation.
